In an era of exponential change we need to be sure that our boards are as collectively intelligent as possible (vs collectively unintelligent, to put it mildly!) and I shared latest research from the Advisory Board Centre regarding the roles that advisory boards can play in helping you remain future proofed. My talk focused on Level 4 of the 5 Level Reset I invite leaders to embark on for the new battleground of business success. Level 4 relates to developing an "Advisory Advantage". I put that in the context of what I call C2C: Conversation-Flow to Cash-Flow and mentioned my work with Alan Mulally, the former CEO of Ford and Boeing Commercial Airplanes, who said, "C2C: Conversation-Flow to cash-Flow gets to the heart of the challenge". The dilemma is that Governance Boards are being increasingly squeezed between the weight of a bigger and bigger agenda they must be addressing and the inertia of board constraints with increasing bureaucracy, regulation, and risk of fiduciary responsibility. As a result, their conversation-flow can easily get bogged down, be narrower and shallower than it should be and not as future-proofing as it needs to be, especially in an era of accelerating VUCA and exponential change. Is it any wonder that we see the evidence of poor conversation-flow in the poor cash-flow and and share-price of corporates struggling to keep up and stay ahead?
In response to this challenge, the Advisory Board Centre's leading research identifies a megatrend unfolding globally, of a broadening frame of reference for the governance system. Not only of adding an advisory board to supplement the thinking system and problem solving capability and capacity. But also evolving from a traditional view of advisory boards and governance boards standing apart from one another, to a more integrated view of them being seamlessly side by side and overlapping on a continuous spectrum of a governance system. Working in unison, they have a much better fighting chance of driving the full range of conversation-flows required to be future-proofing the enterprise with the agility required.

We urge leaders to be agile with agile! Which means, start small and finish big, starting with something simpler sooner and sophisticating it later. Don't set out to boil the ocean all of a sudden. Rather, get a small snowball rolling and accumulate from there, enjoying early benefits from your endeavors which help build momentum and can become progressively self-propelling and self-funding.
